At Italian Style Qatar, design transcends mere creation—it becomes an exploration of the soul. As a Senior Interior Designer, Ranoosh Ali embraces this philosophy, crafting spaces that evoke emotion, seamlessly blending beauty with purpose.
Born in the serene village of Arakkinar in Calicut, Kerala, India, Ranoosh’s journey into the world of interior design was driven by an insatiable curiosity and a passion for lifelong learning. His career began at Midas Interiors in Kannur, where he immersed himself in the artistry of local craftsmen and masons. This formative experience was not merely about mastering technique but about discovering the poetry woven into every texture, material, and form. His pursuit of design excellence led him to Qatar, where he joined Motive Decoration Qatar WLL. Here, he expanded his creative horizons, embracing diverse design philosophies. At Al Wakeel Interiors, he further refined his aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the intricate interplay of Arabic and Indian design traditions.
Today, at Italian Style Qatar, Ranoosh has found the perfect canvas for his vision. More than shaping interiors, he crafts experiences—environments that resonate with the human spirit. Encouraged by the founders and team, he continues to push creative boundaries, weaving timeless narratives into every project. In an ever-evolving industry, Ranoosh remains a perpetual student of design, constantly exploring, learning, and innovating. His mission is clear: to create spaces that embody elegance, meaning, and the depth of human experience.
Helena Costa: What inspired you to pursue a career in interior design? Was there a key moment that sparked your interest?
Ranoosh Ali: Imagine wandering through the vibrant streets of Calicut, where the rich tapestry of traditional architecture and craftsmanship tells stories of cultural heritage. For me, it was in these moments that the spark for interior design was kindled. It wasn’t just the visual allure that captivated me, but the realization that design is a dialogue between past and present, shaping how we experience and inhabit our spaces. That revelation set me on a path of crafting environments that resonate deeply with personal and cultural significance.
HC: How has your passion for design evolved since you started, and what keeps driving your creativity today?
RA: From the initial fascination with visual aesthetics to a profound appreciation for how spaces influence human experience, my passion for design has evolved significantly. What drives my creativity today is the endless possibility of exploring new materials, techniques, and ideas. Each project offers a fresh canvas to merge tradition with innovation, and this continuous exploration keeps my creative spirit alive and evolving.
HC: How would you describe your design philosophy? What core principles guide your approach to interior design?
RA: Design, to me, is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. My philosophy is about crafting spaces where every detail speaks to both heritage and innovation. Core principles guiding my approach include respecting the cultural narratives embedded in materials, ensuring that functionality meets elegance, and personalizing environments to reflect the unique stories of their inhabitants. It’s about creating spaces that are both timeless and deeply relevant.
HC: Can you walk us through your creative process when starting a new project? How do you balance creativity with practicality?
RA: Embarking on a new project feels like setting out on a compelling journey. I start by deeply understanding the essence of the space and its occupants, gathering inspirations, and developing a vision. Balancing creativity with practicality involves thoughtful planning, where every design choice must delight the senses while serving its intended function effectively. The goal is to weave imagination with practicality, creating a narrative that seamlessly integrates both.
HC: Who or what has had the greatest influence on your work? Are there particular designers or movements that resonate with you?
RA: With technological innovation, will be increasingly more integrated into the interior design of all spaces and I foresee that much of decorative item production will fade into the backgrounds.
HC: Could you share a project that you’re particularly proud of and explain what made it special or unique?
RA: One project that stands out is a residential design where we blended traditional elements with modern functionality. What made this project unique was the collaborative process with clients to infuse their cultural heritage into the design. The result was a space that was not only a home but a reflection of their identity and values. The integration of tradition with contemporary needs made this project particularly rewarding.
HC: In your opinion, what trends are shaping the future of interior design, and how do you incorporate them into your work?
RA: The future of interior design is being shaped by trends that emphasize sustainability, technological integration, and a deeper connection with nature. Picture a space that is not only visually striking but also promotes environmental health and incorporates smart technology. I embrace these trends by selecting eco-friendly materials, applying biophilic design principles, and integrating technology to enhance both functionality and comfort.
HC: How do you see sustainability influencing the future of interior design? What role does it play in your projects?
RA: Sustainability represents a fundamental shift in design, reflecting our collective responsibility to the environment and future generations. In my projects, sustainability is a guiding principle, influencing material choices, energy efficiency, and overall design approach. By prioritizing eco-friendly practices, I strive to create spaces that are beautiful, functional, and harmonious with the natural world.
HC: “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs. How do you balance aesthetics and functionality in your designs? Do you believe one should take precedence over the other?
RA: Design is a dance between form and function. Aesthetics draw us in, while functionality ensures the space serves its purpose. In my approach, neither aspect overshadows the other; they are intertwined in a harmonious balance. The essence of design lies in creating environments where beauty and utility coexist, each enhancing the other to produce spaces that are both inspiring and practical.
HC: What advice would you give to aspiring designers who are passionate but feel uncertain about their expertise in the field?
RA: To aspiring designers, I’d say view your passion as a guiding star on your journey. Each challenge and success contributes to your growth. Embrace continuous learning, seek diverse experiences, and be open to feedback. The path to expertise is a journey of exploration and refinement, where passion and dedication pave the way for your development. Trust in your ability to evolve, and let your curiosity drive your creative journey.
